Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders in which the blood sugar levels are higher than they should be, over an extended period. There are 3 known types of diabetes, with similar symptoms. The most common symptoms include increased hunger and thirst, unexplained weight loss, frequent urination, headaches, and blurred vision.
Type 1 diabetes is often developed when the immune system destroys cells in the pancreas, so they cannot create insulin. The pancreas is in charge of producing insulin depending on blood sugar levels, and without the essential cells to make them, diabetes type 1 occurs. The main cause is unknown.
Type 2 diabetes is when the cells in the pancreas respond to insulin poorly. With the progression of the disease, a lack of insulin may also develop. The most common cause of developing type 2 diabetes is obesity or excessive body weight and insufficient physical activity.
The third type of diabetes is gestational diabetes which affects pregnant women without any previous history of diabetes. Their blood sugar levels increase and stay high for a long period.
While you cannot prevent type 1 diabetes, and the condition must be managed with insulin injections, the patients must maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Type 2 diabetes can be prevented with a healthy diet and regular exercise, keeping track of the blood pressure and maintain a normal body weight.
