Many people would love to decorate their bathrooms with lush greenery. However, that can be tricky, but not impossible. You’ll need to consider a few things when choosing bathroom flora..

LIGHTING

Even low light plants require some light to grow and many bathrooms have small windows or maybe none at all. Use fluorescent light bulbs which produce wavelengths plants need.

HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE

These conditions don’t suit many plants, and they are very often caused by hot running water from showers and baths. Tropical flora does great in bathrooms.

SPACE AND POSITION

Space for greenery is often limited in bathrooms and that’s why large or tall plants don’t often work in bathrooms. Choose plants that can hang from the ceiling, or will trail down from a high shelf.

The Best Bathroom Plant Choices

Aloe Vera

This is the “plant of immortality” and it is an incredibly useful plant to have around the home. Its juice is bursting with minerals and vitamins and the aloe vera gel can be used as a topical treatment for dry skin, insect bites and more. Place it close to the window and the humidity alone may meet most of its water needs.

Bamboo

Bamboo should be placed in low, indirect light, it doesn’t need any soil. Pop the stalk into a container with pebbles, and water and change the water every two to four weeks. Curtail its growth by providing a physical barrier (it grows really fast).

Begonia

Begonias must be overwintered inside and it seems that the bathroom is one of the best locations to accomplish that. They require daily bathroom humidity and do best in fluorescent lighting.

Boston Fern

The Boston fern is native to sub-tropical and tropical rain forests. It requires lots of indirect light and it grows best when placed on a windowsill. The soil should be kept moist in the growing months. Keep in mind that temperatures between 55 and 75 degrees are important for this plant to thrive.

Cast Iron Plant

It can survive low light, extreme heat, and infrequent watering. Place your cast iron plant in low moderate light and allow it to dry out before re-watering. It will happily thrive in temperatures from 50 to 85 degrees.

Chinese Evergreen

This is one of the most durable plants you can grow. Chinese Evergreen thrives in indirect sunlight and it is flexible enough to tolerate different environments if necessary.
